FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. Cameron Higgins threw for 334 yards and four touchdowns and running back Trevyn Smith added 104 yards on the ground and three total touchdowns as Weber State beat Northern Arizona University 42-14 on Saturday.
With the win, Weber State (7-2, 5-0 Big Sky) moved into sole possession of first place in the Big Sky Conference race, while Northern Arizona (6-2, 4-1) dropped into a tie for second with Montana.
Higgins got the Wildcats' scoring parade going when he connected with Smith for a 14-yard touchdown pass on Weber State's opening possession of the game. Two possessions later, Higgins found tight end Cody Nakamura for a 46-yard score to give the Wildcats a 14-point lead.
After Northern Arizona quarterback Lance Kriesien was intercepted by Weber State's J.D. Folsom, the Wildcats scored on their second play from scrimmage when Smith scored from three yards out to make it 21-0 before the first quarter came to a close.
Northern Arizona got on the board when safety Cyrus Igono intercepted Higgins and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. Weber State answered back, though, as Higgins found Mike Phillips for a 19-yard touchdown.
Kriesien scored from one yard out to cut it to 28-14, but the Lumberjacks never got any closer. Kriesien finished 5-for-10 for 36 yards and an interception. He added 64 yards on the ground on 12 carries before being replaced by sophomore Michael Herrick.
Herrick, who came in with his team trailing 35-14, finished 10-for-15 for 102 yards and an interception.
Phillips led all Weber State receivers with five catches for 79 yards and a touchdown. Nakamura added four catches for 98 yards, while Tim Toone also had four catches for 78 yards and a touchdown.
