COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — There may have been fireworks after the game, but the real excitement came a few minutes earlier in Skyline's 16-0 win over Brighton Friday night.

The Eagles led just 9-0, and the home crowd was cheering on the Bengals as they completed a fourth-down pass to the Skyline 10.

The next play changed the game.

Caleb Latteier stepped in front of Jace Felix's pass and returned the interception 92 yards for the score. The turnover was the only one of the game and was the big difference.

"We were playing man-to-man and I was in charge of the flat," Latteier said. "It all happened so fast. I just jumped the route."

Latteier made the play, avoided several tackles, ran along the sidelines past the excited Skyline bench, and was almost out of breath when he crossed the goal line. It was his third interception this season, but the first time he scored.

"They were moving the ball, and I was getting an upset stomach," said Skyline coach Roger Dupaix. The longtime coach was jumping up in the air with his players as the play went past

The win improved Skyline's record to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in Region 2, which is good enough for third place. The Eagles had already clinched a 5-A playoff berth, but now they know they will play at Lone Peak next week. Brighton, meanwhile, finishes in fourth place and pays a second visit this season to Pleasant Grove.

Brighton managed just 181 yards total offense, and only 63 yards rushing. Felix, however, converted several clutch pass plays in the second half.

Skyline, on the other hand, controlled the line of scrimmage and had 320 yards rushing. The Eagles hurt themselves with seven fumbles. Ironically, they recovered them all, but the miscues often came at key times and killed drives.

Algernon Brown led the way with 150 yards on 21 carries. Tupou Hautao added 73 yards on 12 carries.

The Bengals only had a few errors, but they were critical. Besides the interception, Brighton was hit with a running into the kicker penalty as Skyline missed a long field goal attempt.

The penalty was only five yards, but it allowed Skyline to convert on fourth down. A couple of runs by Brown put the ball near the goal line and quarterback Kevin Wagstaff scored the Eagles' first touchdown.

Brighton only had one other scoring opportunity. In the second quarter, kicker Anthony Mares' 35-yard attempt fell short. The cold, night also contributed to a missed field goal by Skyline.
