WEST VALLEY CITY — It was a milestone night for the Riverton Silverwolves.

Riverton defeated Hunter 27-7 on Thursday night, earning its first-ever victory over the Wolverines. The win also clinched a second-place finish in Region 3 for the Silverwolves, giving them the chance to host a 5A playoff game for the first time in school history next week. Riverton will play Region 1's third-place team, which is yet to be determined.

Riverton, which was 0-5 against Hunter before Thursday night's game, had to take care of business against the Wolverines before it could think about hosting a playoff game next week. The Silverwolves were in the same position against Hunter in the final game of the season last year — hoping to clinch second place — but were whipped 23-0 on their home field.

"It's just a big relief," Riverton running back Dillon Draper said of his team finally getting past Hunter. "It's a big weight off our shoulders."

Silverwolves coach Mike Miller said beating Hunter was a big hurdle for his program.

"I think this just shows that our program is continuing to get better," he said. "Every year we've gotten a little better and placed a little higher in the region, so I'm proud of the kids. They showed a lot of character tonight to come out and win this one."

Hunter struck first on Thursday night, sending a message that it could be a long night for the Silverwolves. Chris Harris, who returned the opening kickoff 50 yards, caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Brett Lunceford to give the Wolverines a 7-0 lead.

Riverton immediately responded. The Silverwolves put together an impressive drive, culminating with a 35-yard touchdown run by Draper. Daniel Hoffman scored early in the second quarter to give Riverton the lead for good.

Draper, Hoffman, Zach Spencer and Paydon Newman helped Riverton rush for 291 yards in the team's wing-T attack. Draper added a second touchdown in the third quarter to put the game away. All four players showed that they are capable of producing, and Thursday night was Draper's opportunity to shine.

"Every week we have a different kid that does a great job," Miller said. "The constant in the whole scenario is our offensive line, and I thought they did a super job tonight."

Riverton's defense was equally superb. The Silverwolves allowed Hunter to put some drives together, but always made the big play to end the scoring threats after the Wolverines' first drive. Matt Aston had two sacks, while Marco Trujillo and Jake Green each had an interception.

"I'm pleased with how we played in all aspects of the game," Miller said.
