James Evans, Salt Lake County GOP chairman, says Seegmiller didn't check a box on the questionnaire saying he was for or against such parental rights, so there is a question there.

"These are his answers" on the 2006 questionnaire. "We have a right to communicate that" to voters, said Evans. Evans adds that he decided to file for an anti-Seegmiller Web site domain name and put up his site only after Democrats did the same thing with Curtis. "They showed me how to do it," said Evans.

The Democrats' anti-Curtis Web site "is a continuation of a four-year effort to paint the speaker as a bad person, questioning his integrity. And Jay Seegmiller can't sit by and let that happen and then play the victim," said Evans.

Mailers and the GOP Web site also point out that Seegmiller did check a box saying he would consider letting medical doctors prescribe medical marijuana for ill people. But the GOP site goes on to say that in one Southern California city, leaders decided to let those with medical marijuana prescriptions smoke the drug in a tent in a public park.

The Republicans say on their Seegmiller site: "Jay wants to legalize marijuana. ... If Jay Seegmiller gets his way, this event (pot smoking in a public park) could happen in your neighborhood park in Utah one day."

"Of course I don't favor that," said Seegmiller. "And I don't want to legalize marijuana. When I answered that question, I was thinking of a friend who had cancer, and the only relief he could find was taking the marijuana ingredient. It is ridiculous to say that I favor legalizing that drug or smoking it legally in a park.

"Talk about getting desperate, talk about the lack of ethics and integrity in the Legislature," he added. "Republicans are stooping to anything to win."
