PLAYOFF FEVER: What a difference a week makes. Entering Week 9, Class 5A had filled just four of its 16 berths; now, only three are undecided. In 4A, six spots remain open and in 3A, nine of 16 berths are still up for grabs.
Here's a region-by-region rundown of the teams that have clinched, the number of remaining open berths and projections for which teams are likely to fill those spots.
Class 5A
Region 1: In: Layton, Davis, Syracuse, Viewmont. Open Berth (1): Northridge
There are eight scenarios for how this region will finish and some of them are messy. The seeding order depends on the outcomes of three games, Weber at Layton, Syracuse at Davis and Viewmont at Northridge. Each result will affect the other games. Weber's only chance is to upset Layton and have Viewmont beat Northridge Weber and Northridge would then tie for fifth. Only Layton controls its own destiny completely; Lancers will likely be first and win their 10th region crown and second consecutive outright title. Northridge can't finish higher than a tie for third. Fremont is out of the playoffs for the first time since 1996, a run of 11 years. Clearfield is also out.
Region 2: In: Alta, Jordan, Brighton, Skyline. Open Berths: none
Alta and Jordan play to claim the outright region championship and No. 1 seed. The Hawks are three-time defending Region 2 champs (last two outright) and seek their ninth region title. The Beetdiggers have won 25 region championships, the last as co-champs in 2005. Skyline at Brighton will decide third and fourth place; Hillcrest and Taylorsville have been eliminated.
Region 3: In: Bingham, Riverton. Open Berths (2): Hunter, Kearns
Bingham has claimed the first seed. The Miners have at least a share of a region championship for the 17th time, including the last three years. West Jordan must beat Kearns to force a region playoff with Kearns or a possible three-way playoff including Hunter. Copper Hills is out.
Region 4: In: Pleasant Grove, Lone Peak, Spanish Fork. Open berths: none
The Vikings have clinched the top seed and at least a share of the region crown, PG's third straight and 13th overall. PG will be the outright champs if it beats Lehi. Lone Peak at Spanish Fork will determine second (home game) and third (away game). American Fork, Lehi and Timpanogos have been eliminated.
