New east-side school district gets a name

SANDY — Canyons School District is the name of the newly formed east-side school district that broke away from Jordan School District.

Amid much fanfare, district officials announced the name in a special meeting Tuesday evening at Jordan High School. Prizes were given to the person who came up with the name, as well as the two runners-up who suggested the second and third choices.

The new Canyons district comprises Cottonwood Heights, Sandy, Midvale, Alta and Draper. In November, east-side residents voted to leave Jordan district and form their own school district.
