DUTCH JOHN — Authorities are investigating an apparent hunting accident that claimed the life of a 15-year-old Weber County boy.

Daggett County Sheriff Rick Ellsworth said preliminary information indicates that the teen was accidentally shot on Sunday afternoon by his 55-year-old father. Ellsworth said the man is an experienced hunter.

"They'd taken some shots at some elk, and it was in the process of reloading that I think there was a problem," the sheriff said.

The man's gun discharged, Ellsworth said, and one round struck the teen, killing him instantly.

Ellsworth said investigators are awaiting a report from the State Medical Examiner's Office before officially declaring the shooting accidental. He said they will also revisit the scene in Rifle Canyon near Dutch John before making their findings.

The sheriff declined to release the name of the teen or his father, citing a desire to protect the family's privacy.
