SANDY — The freshly formed east-side school district that broke away from Jordan School District will announce its new name in a special ceremony at 5 p.m. today in the auditorium at Jordan High School, 95 E. Beetdigger Blvd. (9800 South), Sandy.

The public is invited.

The new district is composed of Cottonwood Heights, Sandy, Midvale, Alta and Draper.

District officials have deemed the naming a "historical event." The last time a school district was named in Utah was Daggett School District in 1918.

Voting for the name closed last Friday with 4,138 votes being cast for 12 names the public had previously submitted.

"The public response has been terrific. We had great input in name submissions," said new district superintendent David Doty.

"Stakeholder involvement is very important to us and we appreciate all of the involvement and commitment that our stakeholders demonstrate," Doty said.

Name choices were:

• Majestic Peaks School District

• Canyons School District

• Sunrise School District

• Horizon School District

• Mountain View School District

• Lone Peak School District

• Wasatch Peaks School District

• Mountain Ridge School District

• Alta School District

• East Jordan School District

• Canyon Ridge School District

• Mountain Peaks School District.
