Red Bulls' keeper gets offensive in New York win
Cepero, who has been with New York (10-10-9) for two seasons but never played, got the start because regular goalie Jon Conway was suspended 10 league games for using a banned substance.
Cepero's goal came when he took a direct kick from his own 25-yard line in the 83rd minute. The ball bounced high about 20 yards in front of the goal and went in over the head of Columbus goalie Andy Gruenebaum.
Cepero also made two saves, including a spectacular diving stop in the final minute of the first half that kept the game scoreless.
Angel gave New York a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute, when he made a brilliant sliding maneuver between two Crew defenders to get to the ball and beat Gruenebaum.
The Crew (16-7-6) tied the game in the 62nd minute, when Steven Lenhart headed home a direct free kick attempt from Guillermo Barros Schelotto, but Angel put the Red Bulls ahead for good in the 75th, when he secured a pass from Seth Stammler with his chest, then put the ball to his right foot and beat Gruenebaum for his 13th goal.
Houston (13-5-11) eliminated Los Angeles (8-13-8, 32) from playoff contention.
Los Angeles' Bryan Jordan had an own goal in the 14th minute.
Houston goalkeeper Pat Onstad made five saves for the 50th shutout of his career.
