ORLANDO, Fla. Ryan Nyquist won the BMX Park competition Friday at the PlayStation Pro to end Daniel Dhers' winning streak at four.
"I upset Daniel's streak, but it's competition, you know," Nyquist said "I didn't want to make the judges give it to him, but I kind of feel bad in the end from taking it from him."
The 29-year-old Nyquist, from Los Gatos, Calif., did a backflip over the spine, a 720 barspin over the long box jump and a huge 540 double barspin over the 10-foot quarterpipe to score 95.00. Dhers, from Venezuela, was second at 93.33, and Austen Coleman of Los Angeles finished third at 92.67.
"I didn't know what my score was going to be, but I knew that was pretty much everything I could possibly do," Nyquist said.
Dhers, the final rider in the heat, was unable to overtake Nyquist after a minor stumble during his run but won his third straight Dew Cup as the season champion.
"Daniel is the force to be reckoned with," Nyquist said. "It's a very rare occasion where he can slip up, but I guess the fact that I won makes him human. So maybe that's the little chink in his armor that everybody needs to see."
Jamie Bestwick won the BMX vert event Friday. Bestwick's win earned him the Dew Cup and he made AST history as the first athlete to win four consecutive Dew Cups.
"What a dream to four-peat," Bestwick said. "Winning four in a row is a phenomenal feat."
The 36-year old Bestwick, from England, took the lead in his first run to score 94.00 and the field was unable to best him. Chad Kagy of Gilroy, Calif., was second at 92.67 and Simon Tabron of England was third at 91.50.
"Man, what a contest!" Bestwick said. "The riding this year has just been phenomenal. This fourth Dew Cup at this PlayStation Stop win means a lot to me because it's a long road to get here."
The four-day competition is the final event of the five-stop tour that features skateboarding, BMX and freestyle motocross. Today's action features BMX Dirt and Skateboard Vert finals, while the Sunday schedule includes the Freestyle Motocross and Skateboard Park finals.
