The First Presbyterian Church of Salt Lake City is celebrating its Scottish roots with its 25th annual Ceilidh Oct. 25-26. The celebration culminates with the Kirkin' o' th' Tartan worship service Oct. 26 featuring bagpipe music and the blessing of the clans.
The Ceilidh, which is Gaelic for "party," honors the founding of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake City, the Community Concert Series and Pamela's Closet for the indigent.
Activities begin Saturday, Oct. 25, with an all-church yard sale at 10 a.m. Craft booths, a bake sale, silent auction and raffle are also on tap. The Celtic band Clandestine will perform Saturday at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. Pastor Michael Imperiale, the Utah Power Salt Lake Scots Pipe Band and the church chancel choir will take part in the Kirkin' Sunday at two services at 9 and 11 a.m. Clan descendants from along the Wasatch Front bring their family tartans to the special service to be blessed. The community is encouraged to arrive early to find parking and a seat.
