McKay Coppins has been writing newspaper humor columns since he was 15 and is the newest in the stable of MormonTimes.com bloggers. His first piece will appear online Friday.
Coppins brings the "Single, Mormon Twentysomething" voice to MormonTimes.com and plans to introduce himself in his first blog.
Coppins is a native of Holliston, Mass., and grew up reading syndicated humor columnist Pete Chianca. "Our whole family would actually read it together," Coppins recalls.
A ninth-grade journalism class fed by his mother's encouragement that he groom his funny bone by writing for the newspaper led a teen-age Coppins to call Chianca.
"I called him and asked if I could be his apprentice. He said,'Well, I don't know about an apprentice, but you could meet with me.' He then set me up with the editor of the Holliston Tab."
Soon, high-school-sophomore Coppins had a weekly column titled (you'll see this one coming) "Minor Observations," which ran in the Holliston Tab and other weekly community papers under the umbrella of the Metro West Daily News.
