S. Weber, Layton look into wind power

LAYTON (AP) — Some South Weber and Layton residents are looking to harness the wind with turbines.

But so far they haven't gotten very far: City officials don't have any rules on their books for private and commercial wind farms.

City leaders are now in the early stages of developing draft regulations.

Layton Mayor Steve Curtis says about 200 homes in the northeast corner of the city might be able to tap into Weber Canyon's winds as an alternative energy source.

He's hoping, though, that projects move forward in an organized way rather than landowners simply putting out wind turbines on their own.

A backyard wind turbine can cost between $9,000 and $12,000.
