PROVO — Frederik Willem de Klerk, former president of South Africa, will speak at a Brigham Young University forum assembly at the Marriott Center.

The forum, "Bridging the Gap: Globalization Without Isolation," will be held Tuesday at 11:05 a.m.

De Klerk was president of South Africa from 1989 to 1994, during which time he released Nelson Mandela from prison, lifted the ban on the opposition group African National Congress and presided over the negotiations that led to the end of apartheid — paving the way for adoption of South Africa's first fully democratic constitution.

In 1993, de Klerk and Nelson Mandela were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
