With two weeks of play remaining in the Western States Football League, unbeaten Mesa College has a commanding lead following a 39-21 home win against Arizona Western Saturday night.
The Thunderbirds, ranked fifth by the National Junior College Athletic Association, are idle this week and can clinch their first-ever league championship with a victory at Ricks College on Nov. 11. Dixie College and Ricks are tied for second with 5-1 league records. Both are 7-1 overall.In action last weekend, eighth-ranked Dixie blanked defending national champion Glendale 27-0 and Ricks won a non-league game 53-28 at Brigham Young's junior varsity. Also last week, Snow College beat Phoenix 41-10 and Eastern Arizona won its first game since mid-September 1987 by beating Scottsdale 30-13.
Dixie's Tyler DeHart threw scoring passes to wide receiver Terry Weakley of 18 and 5 yards and scored on a 5-yard run in the Rebels' victory over Glendale. Running back Teddy James scored on a 27-yard run and the Dixie defense held the Gauchos to just 56 yards total offense.
Snow running back Duncan Boyd scored on runs of 42 and 4 yards and caught a 12-yard TD pass from Greg Stevens in the win over Phoenix. Wide receiver Tyler Nielsen caught a 38-yard scoring pass from halfback Cedric Miller and defensive end Roberto Navia had three QB sacks.
