FRISCO, Texas — Kenny Cooper scored on a penalty kick in the 89th minute to help FC Dallas tie the San Jose Earthquakes 1-1 on Thursday night.

The penalty kick came after Francisco Lima was called for a hand ball. Cooper fired a shot into the left corner of the net for his 16th goal of the season.

FC Dallas (8-9-10) earned a point, pulling into a tie with Colorado and Real Salt Lake for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. FC Dallas has played one more game than both teams.

Ryan Johnson scored in the 58th minute to give San Jose a 1-0 lead, less than a minute after entering as a substitute for midfielder Ronnie O'Brien.

Jason Hernandez assisted on the goal, sending a long ball from outside his own penalty box and past the outstretched foot of defender Duilio Davino to Johnson. Johnson took the pass from about 25 yards away before firing a left-footed shot into the center of the net from 16 yards out for his fifth goal.

The Earthquakes (7-10-9) have lost only once in 11 games.

San Jose's Joe Cannon and FC Dallas goalie Dario Sala each made three saves.
