UTAH STATE PRISON — A West Valley City man convicted of killing his live-in girlfriend with a shotgun will serve out the remainder of his sentence.

The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole decided that Craig Allen Veale, 58, will only be released when his sentence expires in 2017. Veale was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to one to 15 years in prison.

Veale shot Loretta Romero in the face in 2002. At the time, he claimed it was a "freak accident," saying that he had been drinking heavily when the gun accidentally went off.
