Man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out from the mouth of the Lord doth man live." (Deuteronomy 8:3; see also Matthew 4:4)
The word "bread" is used more than 400 times in scripture and is one of the deepest and most important symbols in the gospel. When Adam and Eve were "sent forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground," God commanded Adam, "in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread" (Genesis 3:19, 23). Thus, bread is intimately connected to the beginnings of man's mortality.
