GLENDALE, ARIZ. The No. 3 Snow College football team rolled over No. 9 Glendale Community College Saturday 45-13. The Badgers fell behind 13-7 in the first quarter but the Gauchos did not score again, while Snow put up 38 unanswered points.
The Glendale defense was ranked No. 1 in the nation prior to the game, giving up only 130 yards a game.
"We played well on both sides of the ball," said Snow head coach Steve Coburn. "We knew this was going to be a dog fight. Our kids came out and played like champions."
Snow freshman quarterback Quinn Mecham, a Timpview High School graduate, threw for 166 yards and four touchdowns in the contest. Mecham leads the Western States Football League in passing.
Freshmen running backs Tyson Church (North Sanpete High School) and BJ McKenzie shared the carries for the Badgers. Church finished with 135 yards and McKenzie finished with 46.
Mecham connected with seven different receivers in the contest, including throwing touchdowns to Sam Thomas, Peter Tuitupou, Matt Harward and Mazi Ogbanna.
The Badgers racked up 380 total yards in the game.
The defense, however, deserves much of the credit, said Coburn.
"They were making plays all over the field," he said. "It was a great performance."
Snow held Glendale to 3 second-half yards, and 154 total yards. Snow also forced three Glendale turnovers, picking off two passes and causing and recovering a Glendale fumble. Travis Barney, a sophomore out of Orem High, returned his interception for a touchdown.
The win puts Snow in the conference driver's seat and brings the season record to 5-0.
Snow is on the road again next week taking on Scottsdale Community College Saturday. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on KMTI 650 AM and kmtiradio.com.
