Timpanogos Cave open again for tours

HIGHLAND (AP) — Timpanogos Cave has reopened after emergency work was done on the switchbacks that take visitors from the bottom of American Fork Canyon.

The cave reopened today in time for the final three weeks of the season before the Park Service shuts it down for winter Oct. 19.

Superintendent Denis Davis said the steep trail had to be shut down for rehabilitation, but a contract finished the work ahead of schedule.

Admission is $6 for each vehicle entering American Fork Canyon on the way to Timpanogos Cave National Monument. That fee is collected by the Uinta National Forest. Mandatory guided cave tours are $7 for adults and less for youngsters.

The hike up can take more than an hour, rising 1,000 vertical feet to three caverns decorated with natural formations.

Davis said it was a good time to take in the canyon's fall foliage from the trail.

Timpanogos Cave is about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.
