High school football: Devils' 'D' adjusts for victory
Once Springville ironed that out, the Red Devils were in good shape.
Springville weathered two long first-quarter touchdown runs by Tooele fullback Jordon Biorge by tightening up the defense and holding on for 38-27 win on Friday night.
Meanwhile, Springville (2-0 Region 7, 4-2 overall) moved the ball almost at will from its spread formation, with quarterback Isaac Allred passing for 316 yards and five touchdowns.
"We know our offense can score, so we weren't worried," Allred said. "We have a lot of weapons and a lot of people we can go to. I have six or seven receivers I can go to and two great running backs and a great line."
It looked at first as if the Red Devil offense wouldn't get much help from the defense.
Biorge rushed for 151 yards on his first four carries, scoring touchdowns of 57 and 80 yards by barreling up huge holes through the middle.
"The guys in the beginning just weren't getting up on the line," said Springville defensive back Colton Ramon, who had two interceptions in the first half. "Once coach talked to us and we started getting up on the line, we started plugging up the holes a lot better. (Biorge) didn't have anywhere to go after that."
Springville shut him down most of the rest of game and didn't allow the Buffaloes (1-2, 3-3) to score again until the fourth quarter. Biorge managed only 42 yards on his final 10 carries before he was helped off the field with a knee injury in the fourth quarter.
"I think our kids probably overpursued a few times in the middle," Springville coach Scott Mitchell said. "They do that offense so well that it's hard to stop. We were just a little tighter on some of the gap responsibilities. They just took bad angles on plays. We focused on maintaining leverage and pursuit."
Leading 24-14 at halftime, Springville took advantage of a Tooele fumble and scored when Allred hooked up with Luke Frampton on a 17-yard touchdown pass.
The Red Devils then took a commanding 38-14 lead when Allred found Jordan Sumsion over the middle for a 23-yard score.
"We felt like there were some opportunities we could take advantage of downfield," Mitchell said. "There were some big plays we thought were there and we felt our guys matched up well against them."
The two teams combined for 28 points in the first five minutes of the game, with Allred matching Biorge's first-quarter scores with two touchdown passes to senior receiver Jeff Boyd.
