High school football: Woods Cross gets last-second field goal for big Region 5 win
WOODS CROSS Catching the ball at the 15-yard line, all Woods Cross' Parker Rose saw was open field, 85 yards later all he saw in the end zone was his teammates and fans going crazy. His interception return for a touchdown right before halftime gave Woods Cross both its first lead of the game but also the momentum needed to win the game 21-19.
"Parker's interception was huge for us, it totally changed the momentum of the game," Woods Cross coach Fred Fernandes said.
Roy struck touchdown gold on their first drive of the game thanks to a huge pass play and two Woods Cross defensive penalties.
After forcing a three-and-out the 'Cats roughed the punter giving Roy an automatic first down. Later a personal foul gave the Royals another first down. On the next play, Roy quarterback Chase Moore threw a beautiful arching pass to Cameron Lamb, who jumped over a Woods Cross defender to score, putting Roy up 7-0.
Woods Cross answered with a scoring drive of its own, highlighted by several big runs from CJ Corry and Willie Wolfgramm, who finished the drive with a 25-yard touchdown run highlighting the runner's great speed. A missed point after by Zachary Cope left the Wildcats trailing 7-6. The 'Cats chased that missed point by twice going for two-point conversions and twice failing to convert. Woods Cross took their first lead in the second quarter thanks to a 55-yard touchdown pass from David Cusick to tight end Mark Evans putting the Wildcats up 12-6.
As smoothly as the Woods Cross offense operated in the first half it was equally rough in the second. Unable to sustain drives or produce points the Wildcats fell behind the Royals 19-18. Roy carried that lead late in the fourth when Woods Cross finally put together a scoring drive.
Facing a fourth-and-one from its own 42 yard line, Woods Cross decided to go for the first down instead of punting, the gamble paid off as Corry rumbled eight yards for the first down. When the drive stalled at the Roy one yard line Woods Cross gave kicker Zachary Cope a chance to earn redemption for the earlier missed extra point, which he did by kicking an 18-yard field goal to win the game 21-19.
