From Deseret News archives:
The 'Wicked' wait is over
Tickets to the super-big, mega-hit musical, "Wicked," will go on sale Friday, Dec. 12, and will be available through ArtTix. Christmas shoppers take your marks!
This week, there are a lot of theater happenings right here in Utah, so here goes:
Congrats, USF: Beyond the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespearean Festival's productions, they are also producing award-winning souvenir programs. The festival has been awarded the International Festival and Events Association's prestigious Gold Pinnacle Award for excellence in festival and events promotion. The gold award, which represents first place in a field of more than 1,500 international entrants, honored the '08 summer season. This is the fourth time in the past eight years that the festival has received the gold award. Bravo!
Congrats to actors Joe Spear, Alex Ungerman, Scott Stringham, Alta Stringham, Jana Grass, Jacob Squire, Anne Mangum and Jaclyn Hales.
ARTS High: A comprehensive high school for the arts opens in Springville on Wednesday. ARTS High offers all forms of performing and visual arts plus a wide range of academics and is a division of Emerson-Smith College. For more info, go to www.emersonsmith.org.
Just a handful of Broadway closings:
Legally Blonde: The musical version of the popular Reese Witherspoon movie announced a closing date of Oct. 19 at the Palace Theatre. The musical saw a slight bump after Bailey Hanks was chosen in the MTV reality casting show but typically only plays to houses that are 60 percent full.
(title of show): The quirky, off-color musical that opened only a few short months ago will close on Oct. 12. Though critics and the cult-fans loved it, ticket sales were slow.
Xanadu: The roller hit moved its closing date from Oct. 12 to today. At least the music and the fashions live on!
