Driver killed, one hurt in head-on collision

BIRDSEYE, Utah County — A head-on collision on U.S. 89 killed one person and sent another to the hospital in critical condition.

Destry Miller, 23, of Spanish Fork, was heading north on U.S. 89 just after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and was nearing Birdseye at mile marker 303 when his Ford Ranger drifted into the opposite lane of travel.

Driving southbound, Peter Grayson, 24, from Springville, saw the car in the wrong lane and moved to the opposite lane to avoid a collision, said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Cameron Roden.

For an unknown reason, Miller swerved back to the correct lane and slammed into Grayson's Jeep Cherokee head on.

Miller was pronounced dead on the scene and Grayson was flown via medical helicopter to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in critical condition with severely broken legs, Roden said.

The road was closed in both directions for nearly an hour and a half while officials cleaned up and investigated the crash, Roden said.

Officials don't believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
