A man suffered second and third-degree burns on his arms and face this afternoon while traveling an estimated 350 mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats.
He was driving a Streamliner named "The Mormon Missile" when the back of the car caught fire, said Mike Cook with the Salt Flats. The driver, Lynn Goodfellow, of Henderson, Nev., was flown to University Burn Center by medical helicopter.
Jim Keeler, who was at the invitational meet, said Goodfellow had topped a land-speed record and was in the middle of his return run when the Streamliner caught fire.
Cook shared little other information about the incident Wednesday, but noted the car did not crash. How it caught fire, however, was still being investigated.
