UTA making room for bikes on trains

The Utah Transit Authority plans to yank some seats on light rail trains to make way for an increasing number of bicycles.

UTA spokesman Brandon Bott says TRAX trains will lose one bench seat in each rail car so bikes don't impede access to doorways.

UTA has already cleared some space for bikes on recycled FrontRunner cars. Bike lockers for rent are also being added to TRAX and FrontRunner commuter rail stations.

High gasoline prices have increased the number of riders on public transportation, including those who use bikes as part of their commute. UTA says an average of 452 riders with bikes boarded FrontRunner trains through August.
