A West High School teacher accused of having sexual relations with a 17-year-old student made his first appearance in court Thursday.
Jose Bernardo Fanjul, 45, was arrested Tuesday and charged with five counts of forcible sodomy, a first-degree felony, and five counts of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony.
Between March 1 and July 31, Fanjul engaged in various sexual acts with the girl, according to the charges filed Tuesday. The incidents happened at the school after hours, at Fanjul's house and other places in the Salt Lake area, according to jail documents.
Fanjul appeared in 3rd District Court on Thursday and a bond hearing was scheduled for next week. The man is being held in the Salt Lake County Jail without bail.
