AMERICAN FORK — A semitrailer carrying two empty tanks caused a mess on I-15 Thursday evening when the truck's load proved too high for a bridge.

The tanks hit the Sam White Bridge near American Fork and were knocked off the truck and into oncoming traffic in both directions, said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Cameron Roden.

A man and woman in a northbound sport utility vehicle suffered minor injuries when a tank hit their vehicle about 7:30 p.m. Both were taken to a hospital in American Fork. The SUV caught fire and was destroyed.

The driver of the semi was uninjured. No citations were immediately issued Sam White Lane was closed overnight so officials could assess damage to the bridge.
