NOTE: The Deseret News top 25 is based on voting by our prep football writers. Total points are based on 25 points for a first-place vote through one point for a 25th-place vote.

1. Alta (1-0) Class: 5A

Was: 1. Points: 298. Last week: Beat Spanish Fork, 42-6.

Outlook: These days, nothing else compares to the Bingham-Alta football rivalry, and a mammoth crowd should be on hand at Alta High this Friday. Next up: vs. Bingham, Friday.

2. Timpview (1-0) Class: 4A

Was: 3. Points: 284. Last week: Beat Pleasant Grove, 10-6.

Outlook: You could've made a convincing argument for Timpview to be ranked No. 1 heading into the season, but it's a little harder to make the case after the T-Birds were forced to grind out a nail-biting win over Pleasant Grove. Next up: vs. Spanish Fork, Friday

3. Layton (1-0) Class: 5A

Was: 4. Points: 264. Last week: Beat Bonneville, 20-0.

Outlook: How will Lancers replace star running back LaVaughn Jackson? Next up: vs. Cottonwood, Friday.

4. Cottonwood (1-0) Class: 4A

Was: 5. Points: 259. Last week: Beat Clearfield, 41-10.

Outlook: Huge test for the Colts this Friday up in Davis County. Next up: at Layton, Friday.

5. Northridge (1-0) Class: 5A

Was: 8. Points: 246. Last week: Beat Jordan, 41-37.

Outlook: Knights won a thriller on KJZZ to open the season and now travel to Southern Utah for their Week 2 contest. Next up: vs. Crespi, Calif., at Snow Canyon High, Saturday.

6. Skyline (1-0) Class: 5A

Was: 15. Points: 237. Last week: Beat Bingham, 24-17.

Outlook: Just like that, Eagles are back near the top of the rankings. Next up: vs. East, Friday.

7. Bingham (0-1) Class: 5A

Was: 2. Points: 236. Last week: Lost to Skyline, 24-17.

Outlook: Missing players or not, much more was expected of Bingham last week, and the Miners are now staring an 0-2 start in the face. Next up: at Alta, Friday.

8. Pine View (1-0) Class: 4A

Was: 7. Points: 224. Last week: Beat Mountain View, 28-6.

Outlook: Panthers took care of business on the road in Week 1. Next up: vs. Dominguez, Calif., at Dixie High, Saturday.

9. Mountain Crest Class: 4A

Was: 9. Points: 204. Last week Beat Highland, 26-21.

Outlook: Mustangs survived stiff test against Highland last week. Next up: vs. Fremont, Friday.

10. Jordan (0-1) Class: 5A

Was: 6. Points: 191. Last week: Lost to Northridge, 41-37.

Outlook: Jordan will represent the entire state when it plays at the Football Hall of Fame this weekend in Canton, Ohio. Next up: vs. Massillon, Ohio at Canton, Ohio, Saturday

11. Logan (1-0) Class: 3A

Was: 13. Points: 181. Last week: Beat Murray, 41-8.
