Baseball

Kevin Jepsen pitched a scoreless ninth inning and first baseman Matt Brown went 1-for-4 at the plate as the United States (4-2) clinched a spot in Friday's medal-round semifinals with a 4-2 victory over Chinese Taipei (1-5). Wednesday's preliminary-round finale between the U.S. and Japan will decide third and fourth place, with the loser meeting top-seeded Korea in the semis and the loser taking on defending Olympic champion Cuba.

Ryan Radmanovich went 1-for-4 in the 5-1 victory by Canada (2-4) over The Netherlands (1-5). Pitcher Steve Green did not see action. Despite the win, victories by both Japan and the United States eliminated Canada from Friday's semifinals.

Women's volleyball

Logan Tom led the United States with a team-high points on 14 kills, three blocks and two assists as the U.S. rallied from a 2-1 deficit en route to a five-set victory over Italy, 20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-18, 15-6. With the win, the Americans earn a rematch with Cuba in Thursday's semifinals, while Italy exits the Olympics in a tie for fifth place.

Kevin Jepsen, Matt Brown and the United States (4-2) will face Japan (4-2) in a preliminary-pool finale to decide third and fourth place in the round-robin standings. Both teams advance to Friday's semifinals, the loser to meet top-seeded Korea and the winner taking on defending Olympic champion Cuba.

Ryan Radmanovich, Steve Green and Canada (2-4) will play for pride in their Beijing Olympics finale against Chinese Taipei (1-5), since both teams failed to make Friday's semifinals.

Men's basketball

Deron Williams, Carlos Boozer and the United States follow up their 5-0 run through Group B by opening the quarterfinals against Andrew Bogut and Australia, which finished Group A play with three straight convincing victories. The winner moves on to Friday's semifinals to face the winner of the Argentina-Greece quarterfinal game; the loser is eliminated from Olympic competition.
