First down: BYU held its second scrimmage of fall camp at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Coach Bronco Mendenhall called the 70-play scrimmage "dead even" between the offense and defense.
Head-turner: Running back J.J. DiLuigi rushed three times for 25 yards; placekicker Mitch Payne nailed a 55-yard field goal prior to the scrimmage, while Justin Sorensen consistently booted the ball into the end zone on kickoffs; and freshman receiver O'Neill Chambers caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Max Hall. No. 4 quarterback Steven Covey ran the option for a drive toward the end of the scrimmage. Linebackers Coleby Clawson, Shawn Doman, Jadon Wagner and defensive lineman Bernard Afutiti were all credited with sacks. Safety Blake Morgan picked off Covey on the final play of the scrimmage.
Injury report: Reserve linebacker Dan Van Sweden suffered a broken leg early on in the scrimmage and will be out 10 to 12 weeks. He will have surgery Monday. Cornerback G Pittman was held out due to a concussion sustained earlier in the week. Linebacker Jeff Bell (arm) and safety Steven Thomas (back) both had to leave the scrimmage.
