LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — A stranded hiker was rescued today after becoming disoriented and dehydrated while on a trail here.

Salt Lake County Sheriff's deputies said the 24-year-old man was hiking Thursday about 5 miles up the canyon when he couldn't go any further.

"He called on his cell phone and said, 'I'm disoriented, getting light-headed, I'm out of water. Come help me!"' Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Paul Jaroscak said Thursday.

Rescuers kept speaking to the man as they hiked to where he was. They are stabilizing him and plan to walk him down the trail to safety, Jaroscak said.

"He got into an area beyond his abilities," he said.
