A man wanted in Las Vegas in connection with a carjacking was arrested by Salt Lake police and the Metro Gang Unit early Friday.

Just after midnight, a member of the gang unit spotted a car that was reported stolen out of Las Vegas, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Paul Jaroscak. He attempted to pull the vehicle over near 3300 South and Main Street, but the driver sped away.

Backup officers were called, and a short chase ensued that ended near 1300 South and 300 West, where the man crashed into a fence, Jaroscak said. The man got out and ran, but he was captured a short time later near an apartment complex, 1450 S. West Temple, after being spotted by an officer working a part-time security job.

Jared Freeman, 28, was arrested for investigation of felony fleeing, possession of stolen property and $50,000 in outstanding warrants locally. Although he was wanted out of Nevada, Jaroscak said law enforcers in Utah were very familiar with him.

He was charged in 3rd District Court in May with felony theft by receiving stolen property. Freeman pleaded guilty in March to attempted theft and simple assault but failed to show up to his sentencing hearing.
