Base jumper injured in Canyonlands National Park

MOAB — It took authorities six hours to rescue a Kansas man who broke his leg while attempting to base jump in Canyonlands National Park.

Grand County sheriff's deputies said the 46-year-old man was attempting to jump off Updraft Arch when he had a problem with his parachute, which caused him to slam into the side of the rock just before hitting the ground. He broke his left leg on impact, at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour, deputies said.

The man was stuck some 350 feet off the canyon floor. Rescuers couldn't reach him because of the terrain, so a helicopter was brought from Salt Lake City to pluck him from the cliff.

The man was flown to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray where he is recovering.
