The number: 17% — Discouraged Americans; few think country is on track

A sense of helplessness seems to be chipping away at America's sturdy conviction in the wake of natural disasters, skyrocketing prices and wars that continue to rage. In fact, a new Associated Press-Ipsos poll says a barrel-scraping 17 percent believe the country is moving in the right direction, the lowest reading since the survey began in 2003. The Associated Press examines the country's recent hardships, posing the question, "Is everything spinning out of control?"
