Warrant issued for carjack suspect

A $50,000 arrest warrant has been issued for the man investigators believe carjacked a woman eating her lunch in a church parking lot earlier this week.

John Jan Mares, 23, was charged Friday in 3rd District Court with aggravated robbery, burglary, two counts of theft and criminal mischief.

On Wednesday, Mares broke into his parents' home where he is not allowed, according to court documents.

"When Mr. Mares saw his relatives, he fled, concealing something beneath his clothing," court documents state.

Mares' mother and brother discovered a safe had been broken into and a .380-caliber handgun was missing.

A short time later, a man had his $500 bicycle stolen, according to court records.

A short time after that, about 12:45 p.m., Mares rode the bicycle to the church parking lot near 5900 S. Highland Drive. He approached the woman eating her lunch in her car, pulled out a pocket knife and demanded the vehicle, court documents state.

The car was found abandoned about 2:30 a.m. Thursday by the Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division in a remote area near 1600 North and 900 West.

Based on fingerprints found on the recovered bicycle and car, an arrest warrant was issued for Mares, according to court records.

A check of court records shows Mares currently has another on-going case for attempted drug possession.
