SANDY Lachell Poffenberger has won three Utah State Women's Amateur titles but has never won the UGA Women's Match Play Championship. She is hoping that will change today when she meets Mandi Incorvaia in the championship match at River Oaks Golf Course.
Poffenberger advanced to the finals with a 3 and 1 win over Emily Copier in one semifinal match Thursday, while Incorvaia, an SUU golfer who lives in Las Vegas, knocked off Tenille Slack 2 and 1 in the other semifinal.
The championship match begins at 8 a.m.
Poffenberger got off to a quick start against the Weber State freshman, gaining a two-hole lead, but by the turn Copier had gained a one-hole lead. Poffenberger grabbed lead again and held a two-up lead going onto the 17th hole when she hit an approach shot within one foot of the hole and won the match 3 and 1.
Slack, a former Utah Women's State Am champion and two-time UGA Match Play champion, started slowly and couldn't get into the rhythm she had earlier in the tournament. She was six down with six to play but won four straight holes, the 12th through the 16th. On the 17th hole Incorvaia made a 12-foot putt for par to gain the victory.
