DELTA — Millard County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a suspected gas thief they said tried to run down a man who caught him in the act.

Deputies got a call Saturday night about the theft of gas from a diesel truck parked at a Delta-area business. When the man tried to call 911, deputies said the suspect got into a fight with him.

"The caller described nearly being ran over by the suspect as the suspect fled the area," Millard County Sheriff Robert Dekker said in a statement.

A sheriff's deputy and a Utah Highway Patrol trooper stopped the man's car near McCornick. In the man's Dodge Ram 350 truckbed, deputies said they found an extra fuel tank, a pump and a hose. Richard Leslie Fipps, 40, was booked into the Millard County Jail on investigation of aggravated assault, theft and trespassing.
