JUNCTION, Piute County A former Piute High School coach charged with rape has been ordered to stand trial.
During a June 2 preliminary hearing, prosecutors added a charge of forcible sodomy, a first-degree felony, against Lawson Rashad Sweat, court records indicate. That charge is in addition to a pair of first-degree felony rape charges Sweat is already facing.
Sweat, 29, pleaded not guilty to the charges, the court records state. A two-day trial will be scheduled. Sweat is accused of sexually assaulting a then-16-year-old student. He was a 27-year-old teacher at Piute High School at the time. He has since resigned.
