West Nile virus found within Salt Lake County

West Nile virus has been detected in mosquito pools in Salt Lake County boundaries, according to the Salt Lake Valley Health Department.

Six of 10 mosquito pools tested by local Mosquito Abatement Districts throughout the county tested positive for the virus.

Last week, the virus was detected in Kane County in a dead bird, as well.

That the virus is clearly active in the state has health officials reminding people to take precautions, including wearing mosquito repellent from dusk to dawn when the critters are active, wearing long pants and sleeves when outdoors and getting rid of standing water to eliminate mosquito breeding areas.

Most people who get infected will not show symptoms. But for a small percentage, the results are devastating.
