OGDEN — When your team is down 10-2 in just the second inning, you would probably feel frustrated. Unless you're Weber's Taylor Shaw.

Down by four runs late in the eighth inning, Shaw came up to the plate with runners on first and second in the Utah High School All-Star game on Saturday night at Lindquist Field.

As he walked up, his good friend, Bingham's Nate Rasmussen from the South squad, did a little trash-talking. Shaw promptly blasted a three-run homer over the left-field fence and pointed toward the opposite dugout while he was rounding the bases.

"Nate told the pitcher to just throw because I can't hit it," Shaw said. "The first pitch I got, I hit it out, started laughing and had to point at him. He couldn't believe it."

Shaw came through again in the next inning, hitting a walk-off single to left field to clinch a 20-19 win for the North All-Stars.

Shaw ended up winning the 5A MVP trophy for his two-hit, four-RBI effort, barely beating Bingham's Brock Whitney, who had four RBIs on two hits and almost hit for the cycle. The only negative thing the Miners' star did was give up the winning hit to Shaw.

"I wanted to get the game-winning hit ... I really wanted to hit it out, but it didn't happen," the College of Southern Nevada signee said. "It's nice to get the win and the MVP trophy, though."

There were only two innings that went scoreless in the 4 1/2-hour marathon game, which made most players feel like they were living a video game.

The South got up to a big lead in the first two innings, including a seven-run second capped off by a two-run shot by Bingham's Nate Rasmussen that hit the scoreboard in left. And by the fifth, they led 15-9.

But the momentum swung the North's way in the top of the sixth, as they came back with six runs of their own. The lead teeter-tottered both ways the rest of the game until Shaw brought things to a merciful end a half-hour before midnight.

In the day's first game, the 3A North All-Stars won 14-13, scoring three runs in the ninth. Carbon's Ron Herrera was selected MVP with a four-hit, five-RBI performance with three doubles.

And in the 4A game, the South All-Stars throttled the North 10-1, and Ryan Thomas from Cottonwood was the MVP.
