PROVO A small, but strong field of professionals will tee off today at the annual Provo Open golf tournament at The Reserve at East Bay Golf Course.
Besides the usual crew of top pros, former PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour golfer Boyd Summerhays will play in the 36-hole event, which concludes Saturday.
Defending champion Ryan Ellis won't play, since he is getting ready for a U.S. Open regional qualifying round early next week. However, former champions Brett Wayment, Todd Tanner, Steve Schneiter and Kim Thompson are all in the field along with Ryan Rhees, Chris Moody, Dave DeSantis and seniors Roy Christensen and Kean Ridd, who tied for first at the recent Rose Park Open. In all just 33 pros are chasing the total purse of $18,000 and first prize of $2,200.
A field of 76 amateurs will also compete, including BYU golfers Robbie Fillmore, Nick Killpack and Adam Tebbs.
Last year's tournament was a three-day event with Ellis taking top honors with a 202 total, three shots ahead of Garrett Clegg.
