Expert to discuss student-loan options

Students heading into college expecting to acquire debt might glean some help from a student-loan workshop being held today and Saturday.

Paul Carlin, a national expert on planning for college, will discuss ways to double and sometimes triple eligibility for free grant money, even while making a six-figure income; as well as how to determine in advance if a school is "affordable," regardless of its sticker price.

"It's not even a matter of getting the best interest rate ... it's getting any ANY money for school at all these days," Carlin said. He plans to settle nerves, letting parents know that a college education for their children is still within reach.

The workshops will be held today at the University of Utah Sandy campus, 9875 S. Monroe St. (240 West), at 10:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. A second workshop will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Salt Lake City Library, 210 E. 400 South.
