Victim of canyon crash is ID'd as West Valley man

SNOWBIRD — Police have released the name of the man who was found dead inside an overturned car in Little Cottonwood Canyon Friday morning.

Anthony Jones, 62, West Valley City, was found inside a car that ended up on its hood in a creek near Snowbird in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

A Snowbird employee who was setting up cones in the parking lot about 7 a.m., spotted the car and contacted authorities, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Paul Jaroscak.

The car dropped an estimated 200 feet off the main road near Snowbird entry No. 2. Jaroscak said an ongoing investigation is looking into the possibility that incident may have been intentional.

The fatal accident is the second near Snowbird in the past two weeks.

On May 5, the sheriff's office was called to Snowbird entry No. 3 where a vehicle was found on its hood in the parking lot. Investigators believe the driver missed a turned going at a high rate of speed off the main canyon road and dropped 70 feet in the air to the parking lot below.

Mowlid Ali, of South Jordan, was pronounced dead at the scene.
