All employees are given background checks, even temporary employees, said district spokeswoman Melinda Colton.

Hansen, however, legally changed his name several years ago from Kevin Vaughn Larsen, according to jail documents and the sheriff's office. Colton said she did not know if the background check would have included his prior name.

As for whether the background check revealed any prior criminal history, Colton said it was district policy not to reveal an employee's personal information. A check of state court records in Utah does not show any charges for either Larsen or Hansen.

Hansen was being held Friday in the Salt Lake County Jail on $10,000 bail on the sexual exploitation charges and $2,300 on the supplying alcohol to minors charges.
