Christine Rogers Mathews1927 ~ 2012Christine Rogers Mathews, 85, passed away February 1, 2012 in Cedar City, Utah. She was born January 27, 1927 to Dalles and Rose (Davies) Rogers in Fillmore, Utah. She was the youngest of four children, including two brothers and a sister.Her parents were both teachers. She grew up and was educated in many rural towns in Millard County, Utah, graduating from Millard High School in Fillmore. Christine graduated from the University of Utah in 1949 with a degree in Home Economics Education. On July 30, 1954, Christine married her sweetheart, John Fay Mathews, in the Manti LDS Temple. They settled in Cedar City, Utah where they raised five sons. Christine followed her parent's example and became an educator teaching Home Economics for three years in Springville, UT, and 26 years in Cedar City schools. Christine led a life dedicated to service to her family, students, LDS Church and the community. She spent 20 years in the LDS Name Extraction Program, 15 years volunteering for the Shakespeare Festival, and was a member of Delta Kappa Gama. Being of pioneer heritage, she served for many years as the local Captain of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and was instrumental in the establishment of the DUP Museum in Cedar City. Christine was a faithful member of the LDS Church and her testimony and service to others has been a great example to her family and those who knew her. She served faithfully in many callings. Christine is survived by her five sons, David (Eloise) Mathews of Kent, WA; John Mark Mathews of Cedar City; Scott (Sharyl) Mathews of St. George, UT; Neil Mathews of Salt Lake City, UT; and Quinn (Neena) Mathews of Cedar City; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brother Jake (Carol) Rogers of Layton, UT; and many loved nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, brother Ted Rogers, and sister Francis (Ralph) Green.The family wishes to express their gratitude to many neighbors, friends, health care providers, and health care facilities that helped to care for Christine the past few years. Eternal friendships were made.Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 11, 2012 at the Cedar Ninth Ward Chapel at 256 South 900 West, Cedar City, UT at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held Friday, February 10, 2012 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Southern Utah Mortuary, 190 North 300 East, Cedar City, UT and Saturday, February 11, 2012 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at the Cedar Ninth Ward prior to services.
