Neil Matthews SchmittOct. 3, 1936 ~ Jan. 8, 2012Neil Matthews Schmitt passed away January 8, 2012, in the presence of his family after a courageous battle with cancer. Neil was born October 3, 1936 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the fourth of six children born to Carl Edward Schmitt and Vera Matthews Schmitt. Neil was raised in the Sugarhouse area where he attended Forest Grade School & Irving Jr. High. At South High School he participated on the State Championship football team of '54 '55 and the State Championship Track team where he set a new state record in the pole vault. He was on the track team at the University of Utah where he graduated in Business Management. He was sealed to his sweetheart, Connie Josephine Ledesma on July 2, 1959 for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple.Dad served in the Utah Army National Guard for 6 years. Neil was a very active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a full-time mission for his church in the Great Lakes Area from February 1957 to February 1959. Of all the positions of leadership in the church, Dad enjoyed working with the young men and young women the most. His favorite calling was Scout Master where he created an opportunity to take two different troops to the National Boy Scout Jamborees.Of all his accomplishments he was most proud of being a devoted husband, a loving father to his children and a "Grampa" to his grandchildren. He enjoyed his children's friends and the association he had with them. He also enjoyed his many many friends in business, socially and in his church service. No one has better friends who have always been a great influence in his life. For them he has always been very grateful.A special thanks to his dear friend and great mentor, Vaughn J. Featherstone who influenced his life for good more than any other single person. He loves you dear brother.Neil is survived by his wife, children; Vaughn (Dawn) Keller, TX; Catherine (Wade) Wozab, Eagle Mountain, UT; Darren (Brooke) Herriman, UT & Cristen (Troy) Budd, SLC, UT; Daughter-in-Law Trina, 19 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren with two more on the way.Preceded in death by infant daughter Sherrie, son Brian, parents & siblings; Victor, Carol, Eva, Dale & Lee. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am, January 12, 2012 at Little Cottonwood Stake Center, 1160 E Vine Street (6160 S). Viewings held Wednesday 6-8pm at the Stake Center & also one hour prior to service. Interment: Larkin Cemetery, 1950 East 10600 South. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Primary Children's Hospital.
