Bookmarks: Recently released memoirs and biographies

Here are some biographies and memoirs that have crossed our desks recently.

"FIVE CHIEFS: A Supreme Court Memoir," by John Paul Stevens, Little, Brown and Company, $24.99, 292 pages (nf)

John Paul Stevens served 35 years as a Supreme Court justice and served with five different chief justices: Fred Vinson, Earl Warren, Warren Burger, William Rehnquist and John Roberts. To answer the questions he was repeatedly asked about his time on the court, he penned this memoir about several of the significant cases, the chief justices he worked under and some of their work.

"SOCRATES: A Man for Our Times," by Paul Johnson (nf): Historian Paul Johnson looks at the life of Socrates and the time he grew up in.

"THE STORY OF CHARLOTTE'S WEB: E.B. White's Eccentric Life in Nature and the Birth of an American Classic," by Michael Sims (nf)

"PATRICK HENRY: First Among Patriots," by Thomas S. Kidd (nf): The life and legacy of Patrick Henry.

"INSIDE COCA-COLA: A CEO's Life Story on Building the World's Most Popular Brand," by Neville Isdell with David Beasley (nf): Isdell took the helm of Coca-Cola in 2004 and helped turn the company around using his theory of "connection capitalism."

"GEORGE F. KENNAN: An American Life," by John Lewis Gaddis (nf): The life of George F. Kennan, one of the more influential American diplomats of the Cold War era, is profiled.
