Just two of the six coaches in this week's finals have won state championships: Logan's Mike Favero (three) and Fremont's Kory Bosgieter (one, at Weber).
Three others make their first title game appearance: East's Brandon Matich, Lone Peak's Tony McGeary and Desert Hills' Jake Nelson. They're trying to become first coaches to win a state championship in their first attempt since Ryan Higgs captured the 1A title at North Sevier in 2008.
The sixth coach, Hurricane's Chris Homer, is in the finals for the fourth straight year, still seeking that elusive state crown.
Of the six schools, only East and Logan, both in 4A, have claimed state championships.
