Summary

For so many families, the holiday season is all about doing things together — and that often includes watching movies.

In terms of family-friendly films, these are the worst of the worst: movies that saturate the silver screen with sex, violence and salty language. Let's be clear here: These are films that the Deseret News definitely doesn't endorse. But we find some humor in reading the Motion Picture Association of America's summary descriptions for films like these, when the MPAA tries to jam two hours' worth of debauchery into a 15-word description — so indulge us on our way out the door.

"Rampart": Tells a dramatized version of the Los Angeles Police Department's gang-fighting Rampart Division that ran amok with dozens of dirty cops in the late 1990s. The film's tagline says it all: "The most corrupt cop you've ever seen on screen."

Rating: R for pervasive language, sexual content and some violence.

Release date: Nov. 23

"The Sitter": Fresh off his featured role opposite Brad Pitt in "Moneyball," Jonah Hill returns to the lowbrow brand of comedy that made him famous in "The Sitter." Hill plays Noah, a lazy college student living with his mom who unwittingly gets roped into baby-sitting the neighbor's kids. "The Sitter" somehow contains violence, drugs, sex and language — despite the fact that the most prominent supporting characters in this movie are the three young children Noah baby-sits.

Rating: R for crude and sexual content, pervasive language, drug material and some violence.

Release date: Dec. 9.

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo": Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara star in the much-anticipated English-language adaptation of Stieg Larsson's international best-seller about a journalist who solves a murder mystery with some unanticipated help from a brilliant (and heavily pierced) young woman.

Rating: This film is not yet rated — but for an idea of what this rating might look like once it materializes, here's the MPAA rating description for the 2009 Swedish-language version of "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo": R for disturbing violent content including rape, grisly images, sexual material, nudity and language.

Release date: Dec. 21.

"In the Land of Blood and Honey": In addition to earning producer and screenwriter credits, Angelina Jolie makes her directorial debut with this film about two people who fall in love in 1992 just before the Bosnian war explodes. And in case you're wondering, Jolie does not appear on-screen in "Blood and Honey."

Rating: R for war violence and atrocities including rape, sexuality, nudity and language.

Release date: Dec. 23
